The Jets cut Matt Simms on Thursday after the quarterback requested his release, according to a source. Once the Jets drafted Bryce Petty, it became highly unlikely that Simms would make the roster.
By having his request for release granted, Simms has the possibility of joining another team for OTAs and minicamp. It might have been harder for Simms to find a job if he was released during final cuts before the season.
The Jets now have four QBs on the roster: Geno Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Petty and Jake Heaps.
The son of former Giants great Phil Simms, Matt Simms was on the Jets in 2013 and 2014.
