Bates will be the third offensive coordinator for Bowles, who became the Jets' head coach in 2015. Chan Gailey held the job from 2015-16. Morton held it for one season. And now, Bates steps in.
Bowles loves the way Bates sees and analyzes a game — and an offensive scheme.
"Just his take on the game overall, seeing everything from a different angle," Bowles said. "He sees some things that you really don’t get to see from a coordinator. He’s always three plays ahead. Just his feel for the game."
Unlike Morton (who was a receivers coach), Bates has a background working with quarterbacks, which could help him in his new job.
