In his third year of eligibility, former New York Jets center Kevin Mawae is one of 15 modern-era finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, it was announced Tuesday night.
Mawae is a worthy candidate because he revolutionized the position. He wasn't your typical, stay-at-home center. Because of his unusual athleticism, he was able to pull and lead sweeps, helping to pave the way for some of the NFL's most prolific rushing attacks.
He played 16 seasons, but the heart of his career was with the Jets -- 1998 to 2005. In his eight seasons, he made six Pro Bowls and was twice named to the All-Pro team, becoming one of the most decorated players in team history.
