Scott Mersereau heard the devastating news about Dennis Byrd’s death last Saturday and couldn’t believe what had happened to the man whose life he had become so inextricably linked nearly 24 years earlier.
Mersereau, the former defensive tackle Byrd had crashed into and suffered a paralyzing injury on Nov. 29, 1992, had just gotten home from a high school fundraiser he had attended with his wife near the couple’s home in Boca Raton, Fla.
