FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — The New York Jets’ quarterback competition appears over before it even got started.
Offensive coordinator Chan Gailey said Wednesday that Geno Smith is the team’s starter “right now,” and the Jets expect it to be that way heading into the season opener in September.
“You see an awful lot of talent there. He can be pretty good if he can get it all together,” Gailey said.
Coach Todd Bowles has said throughout the offseason that Smith would head into training camp taking the first-team snaps over veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick, who is recovering from a broken leg.
