The Jets drafted Trenton Cannon out of Virginia State, a small Division II school, with a role in mind: return man. Cannon was explosive in college, leading the nation in kick return average. But in four years of college, he returned just one punt.
Through a few weeks of training camp, Cannon has shown that fielding punts isn't easy. He's struggled to catch them in practice at times, then had a terrible outing in the Jets' first preseason game – muffing two punts and nearly dropping another.
It was a disappointing start to the experiment, to say the least.
