I recently had the opportunity to meet Eugenie Tsai, who is the John and Barbara Vogelstein curator of contemporary art at the Brooklyn Museum, and receive a tour of two very popular exhibits. One was Kehinde Wiley’s "A New Republic" and the other, Jean-Michel Basquiat’s "The Unknown Notebooks."
We started with Wiley’s exhibit. Kehinde, which means “second twin” in Yoruba, began studying art when he was very young, even traveling to Russia through an art exchange program. As Kehinde grew, he continued participating in art, eventually graduating from Yale with a master's in fine arts. The Brooklyn Museum was responsible for giving him his first museum show and now his work is shown in galleries all around the world.
