The white man accused of gunning down black ex-Jets running back Joe McKnight was released from police custody early Friday — as officials contradicted witness claims the athlete was killed as he lay helpless in the street.
Ronald Gasser, 54, who allegedly shot the former football player Thursday afternoon in a road-rage incident outside New Orleans, was questioned and set free without charges overnight, cops said.
An unarmed McKnight, 28, had been arguing with Gasser at an intersection in the suburb of Terrytown, just before the shooting occurred, police said.
Investigators are still consulting with the district attorney’s office on whether to charge Gasser, Col.
