The New York Jets are in desperation mode already this season, staring down a 1-4 record and a visit from the defending AFC champion Denver Broncos on Sunday.
If things continue on their current downward trend, it seems almost academic that head coach Rex Ryan will be sent packing. With that in mind, ESPN's Rich Cimini was asked by a reader if he foresaw a scenario where both Ryan and GM John Idzik would be shown the door:
Can't see that happening, and you know why? Because it would mean Woody Johnson admitting it was a mistake to hire Idzik, and billionaires don't like to admit when they're wrong. A general manager doesn't get canned after only two years unless there are extenuating circumstances. Make no mistake, Johnson put his trust in Idzik when he hired him. Look at Johnson's track record: Terry Bradway got five years and Mike Tannenbaum got seven. If the team continues to go south, it'll be, "Adios, Rex," and Idzik will get to hire his own coach, re-starting his own job clock.
NFL franchises aren't big on completely deconstructing a team in one fell swoop, so Jets fans will likely be on the Idzik train for another year at least.
