Thomas Hickey deflected home a John Tavares pass at 1:53 of overtime to get the Islanders a crucial 2-1 victory over the Calgary Flames on Monday night at Barclays Center.
The Islanders gave up a third-period lead once again, though they didn’t wait until the final minutes this time. Sean Monahan scored on a one-timer from the high slot at 5:51 of the third and the Flames, who played a night earlier, put pressure on to pull ahead.
Tavares gave the Islanders the lead with his sixth of the season at 7:32 of the first — his first goal in 10 games — as the Islanders, returning from a difficult three-game road trip, had a strong start.
