Thomas Greiss gets the start for Isles in season opener

RALEIGH, N.C. – New coach Barry Trotz indicated during training camp he’s always tried to have a clear-cut No. 1 goalie.

For now, Thomas Greiss is getting the first opportunity to win that job.

Greiss will start the Islanders’ season-opener on Thursday night against the Hurricanes at PNC Arena with Robin Lehner serving as the backup.

“I thought they’ve both had really good moments in the preseason,” Trotz said. “Just like anybody else, they’ll have some hiccups. I just felt Thomas was a little more prepared to go right now based on performance. We’re not in a development league, we’re in a performance league.
