The New York Islanders gave it their all tonight, but Dallas Stars goalie Jake Oettinger did them one better.
Opening a five-game homestand that features mostly challenging opponents with a game against the Stars, the Islanders needed to play much better than they did on the four-game road trip they just got back from. They did what they needed to do to beat a team with average goaltending or a team with great goaltending if they get a break.
But Oettinger is an excellent goaltender, and he allowed the Islanders no breaks. He got the Stars to overtime and then prevented the Islanders, whose shootout game may best be described as inept, from scoring a goal in the skills competition.
