As a sophomore at Boston College in 2012, Sydney Esiason received a tweet from a complete stranger. His name was Matt Martin, he played left wing for the New York Islanders, and he was dining with a teammate who casually knew the co-ed.
“It was kind of weird,” says Esiason. “I didn’t know if I wanted to answer. It’s worse than meeting on Tinder.”
But she did tweet back. “I [thought] he was really handsome — like, too handsome, so that was pretty intimidating!” The pair struck up a friendship on social media, then had their first date on New Year’s Eve and quickly became a couple.
