The New York Islanders lose both Jaroslav Halak and Kristers Gudlevskis to free agency they have Thomas Greiss and new to North America Linus Soderstrom in the system. Neither of which is an NHL caliber starter this season.
To be fair, it’s not like either Halak or Gudlevskis were any good. Even if the Islanders had both under contract they’d still be looking for a starter this season. Halak and his above 3.00 GAA and just above 0.900 had a hard time stopping the puck, while Gudlevskis wasn’t much better at the AHL level.
While there are no Carey Price or Pekka Rinne like goalies readily available (for obvious reasons) there are a number of options in the market that, while being a bit riskier, could pay off big time for the Islanders.
