After a phenomenal year from Robin Lehner, the New York Islanders decided against doubling down on the Masterton Trophy-winning goalie. They went another direction, signing Semyon Varlamov to a four-year deal.
It was one of the more head-scratching decisions from Lou Lamoriello to date. Apparently, Lou really wanted to trade for Varlamov before the 2018 draft. A year later he decided to sign him instead of re-signing Lehner.
Over the course of his career, Varlamov has a .916 save percentage and a 2.68 goals against average. Four times, he’s had a save percentage above .
