Isles break in OT as series of comebacks falls short

The last time the Islanders faced the Hurricanes, it resulted in an ugly loss that helped seal the fate of Jack Capuano, who was fired less than a week after the defeat.

Interim coach Doug Weight was hoping for a different result against Carolina on Saturday night at Barclays Center.

“Not having it lopsided in their advantage,” Weight said before the game of his expectations.

This one was far from a blowout, but it still ended poorly for the Isles in a 5-4 overtime defeat.

After John Tavares broke his stick on a faceoff, Ron Hainsey scored the game-winner at 2:52 of the extra session to end a back-and-forth affair that saw the Isles fall behind on three different occasions by the end of the second period.
