Islanders reach new low as playoff hopes slip away

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — The Islanders lost their season-worst seventh straight game Monday when Brendan Leipsic scored his second goal of the game 2:47 into overtime to lift the Canucks to a 4-3 victory.

Darren Archibald scored on a penalty shot, and Jake Virtanen also had a goal as Vancouver snapped a three-game skid. Jacob Markstrom stopped 31 shots.

Josh Bailey, John Tavares and Jordan Eberle scored for the Islanders, who remain five points behind Columbus for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Jaroslav Halak made 19 saves for the Islanders.

The game featured standout rookie Matthew Barzal from Coquitlam, British Columbia, making his first appearance in Vancouver.
