Islanders name Scott Gomez assistant coach

The 37-year-old Gomez, a two-time Stanley Cup winner with the Devils while amassing 756 points over 1,079 NHL games, retired as a player after the 2015-16 season.

Gomez joins Doug Weight’s staff as the only first-time coach. Luke Richardson was named an assistant last week and Kelly Buchberger, currently working in the Oilers organization, is likely to join the staff after the NHL Draft concludes on June 24.

Gomez likely will work with the Islanders’ power play, which has been inconsistent the past few seasons — when it was run by Weight during his time as an assistant coach.
