Islanders’ backup goalie gets best of ex-teammate Crosby

No Robin Lehner, no problem.

The Islanders did not need their resurgent top goalie in order to win their fourth game in a row, a 3-2 shootout victory over the Penguins on Thursday night at Barclays Center that was backstopped by Thomas Greiss.

Lehner missed the game with an unspecified “strain” that caused him to leave after playing the first two periods in Tuesday’s 6-3 win at Pittsburgh. Yet coach Barry Trotz said on Thursday morning that Lehner was “day to day. He may be on the ice as soon as [Friday].”

Lehner was signed as a free agent over the summer, a one-year, $1.
