The Islanders were seconds away from bringing Round 2 of the Battle of New York into their area of expertise: Overtime.
Anthony Beauvillier had managed to tie the game at 12:40 of the third period after the Rangers took their first lead of the game roughly eight minutes earlier. The game was all but headed to an extra five-minute period until Derick Brassard was called for cross-checking in the corner with 54 seconds left.
Seconds later, Chris Kreider was in the right spot at the right time, wristing the puck into the back of the net with seconds left to seal a 3-2 victory in front of a sellout crowd of 13,917 at the Coliseum on Thursday night.
