How Islander icon’s passion continues to help community

PHILADELPHIA — You can take the Islanders out of Long Island, but not Clark Gillies.

It was a couple of weeks ago that I caught a link about Gillies’ charitable foundation having made a sizeable donation to Huntington Hospital. I’m pretty sure it was posted on Twitter by Gillies’ son-in-law, Justin Bourne.

(Yes, Gillies’ daughter, Brianna, is married to Bob Bourne’s son. The September 2011 wedding must have been an eight-ring ceremony.)

Anyway, I thought this was the kind of thing that deserved some (more) notice, just as P.K. Subban’s $10 million donation to the Montreal Children’s Hospital deserved more recognition than it received across the continental industry more focused on plus-minus on the ice than pluses away from the rink.
