WASHINGTON — At the rate they’re going, the Islanders might run out of defensemen before the season is over.
Add Calvin de Haan to the growing list of wounded Isles’ defensemen after he left Thursday’s 5-1 Game 5 loss to Washington following a third-period hit by Troy Brouwer.
They already are missing Travis Hamonic (out the entire series with a left leg injury) and Lubomir Visnovsky (knocked out in Game 4 thanks to a crushing hit by Tom Wilson).
De Haan didn’t return to the game after he left the ice and afterward, coach Jack Capuano didn’t provide an update, but the depleted defensive corps clearly took a toll on the Isles during their disastrous third period.
