SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Giants and 49ers played a game Monday night amid haze and smog and it had nothing to do with the usual weather patterns in Northern California.
The devastating Camp Fire in the region — about 150 miles north of Levi’s Stadium — created smog that caused the air quality index to rise to near-dangerous levels. It was up to 153 around kickoff, a figure considered “unhealthy’’ for sensitive groups, such as those with heart or lung disease, older adults and children. The air quality index was high enough that a general warning was issued directing everyone to reduce prolonged or heavy exertion.
