Previously, the mindset that tight ends were superfluous never made sense. Now, New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur supports a tight end heavy offensive scheme. In order to support that truth, the depth signings at the position made by new general manager Dave Gettleman point in that direction.
Gone are the days under former general manager Jerry Reese and his lieutenant Marc Ross, where the tight end was viewed as an unimportant roster spot. That feeling existed until suddenly reversed course. That paradigm shift came in Reese’s final go-around as GM. There will be some irony in the fact that Shurmur and Gettleman may reap the rewards of having Evan Engram and Rhett Ellison.
