For 41 years, the Giants have avoided selecting a guard in the first round of the draft. They might still be traumatized from their 1974 selection, with the No. 3-overall pick, of John Hicks, a guard from Ohio State, a consensus All-America player, the Outland Trophy winner (awarded to the best offensive lineman in the nation) and the last offensive lineman to finish as the runner-up in the Heisman Trophy voting (Hicks in 1973 was second to Penn State running back John Cappelletti).
