Suspect charged in shooting of New York Giants’ Corey Ballentine

18 year-old Jeffery Mendez is being held in the fatal shooting Washburn University football player Dwane Simmons and his teammate, New York Giants’ draft pick Corey Ballentine. The incident took place in Topeka on April 28. Simmons was shot dead and Ballentine sustained a gunshot wound to the upper leg.

Mendez is being charged with with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and five counts of aggravated robbery and is being held on $1 million bond as per KHSB in Kansas City.

Simmons and Ballentine were attending a party off-campus in Topeka just hours after Ballentine was drafted in the sixth round by the Giants in the 2019 NFL Draft.
