The Giants failed to reach a long-term contract with Saquon Barkley, their star running back, by the N.F.L. deadline on Monday, leaving the two sides at a stalemate over whether he will play this season.

In March, the team offered Barkley, 26, the franchise tag, which would have paid him $10.09 million for the 2023 season, but he declined to sign the tender. It is unclear whether Barkley will sign and report to Giants training camp when it opens for veteran players next Tuesday or if he will hold out.
