The New York Giants made a bit of a surprise move this past week when they decided to use their franchise tag on defensive lineman Leonard Williams because of the fact that they’re just over the cap with under $3 million in cap space.
On Sunday, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported that the Giants and Williams don’t seem close to getting a contract extension done.
The deadline to get something done is pretty much this coming Wednesday when free agency begins because if the Giants can’t sign Williams to an extension by then, then they won’t have the money to pursue guys like Kenny Golladay, Shaq Barrett, Bud Dupree and others.
