Already the treasurer of the NFL Players Association, Giants linebacker Mark Herzlich certainly didn't ask to become the poster boy for defensive players' concerns over the new helmet rule, too.
It just happened that way.
Herzlich was penalized for a personal foul for lowering his head to initiate contact on a second-half play against the Lions that negated a sack by teammate Lorenzo Carter.
The play caused an uproar on social media from players, fans and NFL analysts alike who don't understand how Herzlich's actions as he rushed the passer against a shorter running back who got even lower to chip block could be deemed illegal.
