Absent any first-hand information about or context for the New York Giants’ loss to the New York Jets other than the 10-6 score, one might imagine John Facenda’s voice reverently intoning something like, “As the sun set, these two long-time Gotham rivals met on the battlefield, a defensive slugfest that would be talked about by generations of fans who remembered the days when men were men and football was played in the freezing mud on a cold winter day.”
Uh, no.
This was a final pre-season game of backups, wannabes, and never-will-bes, fighting to determine which of those three categories they will find themselves in by Tuesday’s roster cutdown deadline.
