One of the shortest tenures in NFL history ranks among its most mysterious.
Robert Ayers was signed by the Lions late Monday morning, and took part in that day’s practice, but roughly 28 hours after agreeing to a deal, the veteran defensive end was strangely released.
Ayers, who spent the last two seasons in Tampa after two seasons with the Giants, had posted two images to Instagram, indicating his excitement of joining a new team. Prior to Tuesday’s practice — which didn’t include Ayers — Lions coach Matt Patricia spoke about how he believed the 32-year-old would help the team’s struggling pass rush, which has just one sack in three preseason games.
