Larry Donnell cleared by Giants, setting up tight end battle

After a scare last season that threatened to end his playing career, Giants tight end Larry Donnell received medical clearance from the team Tuesday and officially signed his restricted free agent tender of $1.671 million for the 2016 season.

Donnell, 27, suffered a neck injury in the Nov. 1 loss to the Saints in New Orleans and missed the final eight games. There were no assurances that he would be able to return to football. Before the injury, Donnell had 29 receptions for 223 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning TD catch to beat the 49ers.

Donnell, an undrafted free agent from Grambling State, had a breakthrough year in 2014 with 63 receptions for 623 yards and six touchdowns.
