As he was driven to the hospital, his right hand a mangled, wounded mess after a July 4 fireworks accident, Jason Pierre-Paul recalls seeing “my thumb hanging off a little bit, there was no flesh on my index finger, partial on my middle finger.’’ He also remembers not being in any pain.

But he was thinking about what he had done to himself.

“I was just saying, ‘I messed up, I messed up, maybe my career could be over,’’’ Pierre-Paul said in a video posted Tuesday on SI.com. “I was looking past, thinking more of my family and are they gonna be OK, you know?
