J.J. McCarthy surgery means Giants are likely to see Sam Darnold in Week 1

The New York Giants are playing the Minnesota Vikings at MetLife Stadium in Week 1. It’s a near certainty that New York will not be facing quarterback J.J. McCarthy — the 10th selection from the 2024 NFL Draft.

McCarthy is expected to undergo knee surgery. He complained about knee soreness over the weekend and underwent an MRI on Monday night, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The surgery will determine how long the national champion signal caller will be out, but a Week 1 availability seems nearly impossible.

The Vikings will likely be without McCarthy and star tight end T.
