When you think of the New York Giants’ great defensive coordinators of the past, some names immediately come to mind: Bill Belichick, who earned his stripes in the 1986 and 1990 Giants’ Super Bowl wins and many years later, during an amazing run as Patriots’ head coach, shut down the Rams’ seemingly unstoppable offense in the Super Bowl; Steve Spagnuolo, who did the same in the 2007 Giants’ Super Bowl upset of New England and who has burnished his reputation the past couple of years in Kansas City; Patrick Graham, who for a year at least befuddled opposing offenses with his zone defenses; and Wink Martindale, who made his name with aggressive, blitz-happy defenses in Baltimore and tried, but with limited success, to create something similar at MetLife.
