How JPP can earn $8.7M from Giants — but probably won’t

Jason Pierre-Paul cost himself plenty with his July 4 fireworks incident — and not only in terms of playing time on the field and credibility off it. It also cost him plenty of money.

Pierre-Paul would have been guaranteed $14.8 million had he signed his franchise tender, something he never did. Then came the accident and his damaged right hand, and just like that, the money was gone.

The one-year deal he struck this week with the Giants is worth a maximum of $8.7 million, which is what the franchise tender was reduced to once he missed the first seven games of the season.
