The Giants made up for a lack of true position battles during training camp with the number of mini-battles within the competition to start at free safety.
Before training camp started, it looked 2016 starter Andrew Adams versus 2017 starter Darian Thompson in a race between third-year players entering make-or-break seasons.
Then four different players -- Thompson, Adams, Curtis Riley and Michael Thomas -- each received a turn taking first-team defensive snaps within the first four practices of camp.
"The definition of competition," defensive backs coach Lou Anarumo said at the time.
