Giants open mandatory minicamp without Jason Pierre-Paul (The Associated Press)

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul is skipping the New York Giants' mandatory offseason minicamp after failing to sign the team's $14.8 million tender offer as its franchise player.

Pierre-Paul, who led the Giants with 12 1-2 sacks last season, was not at the minicamp opening workout Tuesday. It wasn't a surprise.

While the team is learning a new defensive system under coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, participating in the minicamp would expose him to injury and risk his chances of signing a long-term contract. Because the 26-year-old is not under contract, he also can't be fined.
