Giants lose two rookie safeties

CINCINNATI - The already tenuous position of safety took a huge hit on Friday night when the two rookies the Giants were counting on to add a modicum of stability to the position left the game with injuries. One of them is unlikely to return this year.

Second-round pick Landon Collins, penciled in as a projected starter, and fifth-round pick Mykkelle Thompson were early casualties of the preseason opener against the Bengals.

Collins injured a knee and was taken to the locker room for X-rays. They were negative and he later returned to the sideline but not the field, which had to be of some comfort to the team.
