Giants free agency 2017: What to know, and expect

The NFL offseason is facing quite the short-week turnaround.

The NFL Scouting Combine will wrap up Monday. When the Giants and the other 31 teams head home, they will have little time to catch their breath before free agency begins.

The legal tampering period opens on Tuesday, March 7 at 4 p.m., meaning teams and player agents can open negotiations and even agree to terms. Those deals cannot be signed until free agency officially opens at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 9 when the new league year begins.

Last season, the Giants enjoyed a historic free agency period, giving over $200 million in total contract dollars (not all of it guaranteed) to defensive end Olivier Vernon, defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins, cornerback Janoris Jenkins and linebacker Keenan Robinson - all of whom helped transform the defense and lead the Giants back to the playoffs.
