Watching the replay of Mark Herzlich’s penalty for what officials deemed a violation of the NFL’s new helmet contact rule hasn’t helped clarify anything for the Giants.
Friday against the Lions, the linebacker was flagged on a play in which a smaller running back picked him up on a blitz. The call was that Herzlich lowered his head to initiate contact, even though replays indicated otherwise.
“Have you seen it?” Olivier Vernon said with a laugh Monday. “I don’t know what you can teach on that. If somebody’s shorter than you and gets low, I just don’t know how you’re supposed to defeat that.
