Giants cut their one-time starting running back

The depth chart is thinning out behind Saquon Barkley.

The Giants waived running back Paul Perkins, who began last season as their starter, the team announced Thursday. Perkins recently had surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle that he suffered while working out on his own. He was without a timetable for a return.

But Perkins was already going to be fighting for a roster spot behind Barkley, veteran signing Jonathan Stewart and second-year back Wayne Gallman.

The Giants had high hopes for Perkins after he showed potential to be a lead back in his 2016 rookie season after being taken in the fifth round out of UCLA.
