The New York Giants hired Shane Bowen as their defensive coordinator earlier in the offseason. Bowen runs a much different defense than previous Giants’ defensive coordinator Wink Martindale.
Martindale ran a lot of eight-man spacing boxes with a post safety (middle-of-the-field-closed). Martindale also used TITE fronts with both edge defenders outside of the tackle to create a five-man wall on the line of scrimmage. This helped defend the B-Gap against spread rushing offenses while spilling runs to contain and secondary contain defenders on the outside.
We did see some seven-man spacing from Martindale’s defense in certain situations, but we’re likely to see much more with Shane Bowen calling plays, for it was his front of choice in Tennessee.
