Ex-NFLer finds jump to athletics not so smooth (AFP)

New York (AFP) - Former New York Giants running back David Wilson leapt into his new athletics career on Saturday, but found it far from smooth sailing.

Wilson finished ninth in the triple jump at the New York Diamond League meeting and his 14.66m -- in a competition won by Cuban Pedro Pichardo with a leap of 17.56m -- meant he failed to qualify for the US World Championship trials later this month.

"I jump further than that in practice from six steps but back to the lab learn to control my speed," the disappointed 23-year-old tweeted.
