Dave Gettleman, walking in for his first cancer treatment after Tuesday’s stunning news that he has been diagnosed with lymphoma, looks at the doctor in charge of his care with that sly half-smile and issues a promise and a warning all wrapped into one:
“My plan is to come in here every day and kick ass,’’ Gettleman will say. “That’s my plan, OK?’’
This was the vow he made Dec. 29, the day he was introduced as the Giants’ new general manager. Now the good-natured, 67-year-old kibitzer who is tasked with rebuilding a downtrodden franchise has a greater fight on his hands.
