When the New York Mets were formed in 1962, they (in)famously used the first pick in the expansion draft on nondescript catcher Hobie Landrith. When asked why, manager Casey Stengel said, “You have to have a catcher because if you don’t you’re likely going to have a lot of passed balls.”
There should be a similarly iconic line about the New York Giants in recent years, “If you don’t have an offensive line you’re likely going to have a lot of sacks.” Of course, the Giants have drafted, and signed as free agents, many offensive linemen in recent years.
