The 2017 NFL Draft is just a few days away and the New York Giants hold the No. 23 overall pick this year. It's already clear which players are heavily linked to the Giants, but there are always a few draft surprises. So what if the Giants pull one of the surprise selections this year?
This list only focuses on those potential surprise picks (who are realistic options in terms of value) or the Giants. That means players who aren't being frequently mocked to the Giants right now. In New York's case, the majority of mocks are projecting a TE like David Njoku or one of the top three offensive tackles. With that in mind, here are three surprise picks the Giants could make in the NFL Draft.
3. Malik McDowell, DT, Michigan State
I don't think this would happen, but that's kind of the point, right? With Jonathan Hankins now in Indianapolis, the Giants need a better DT than Jay Bromley. McDowell has the talent and upside worthy of a top 15 pick. However, he interviewed terribly at the Combine and said he wasn't coachable. That will hurt his draft stock, but a team like the Giants might be willing to take a risk.
2. Dalvin Cook, RB, Florida State
New York likes Paul Perkins (so do I), but he might be more of a rotational back than a full-timer. That makes a running back like Dalvin Cook an option. I think he's on the board for the Giants (and could fall out of the first round), because teams are very concerned about his history of shoulder problems and off-the-field incidents. But if the Giants are willing overlook those and take the risk, it would be quality value.
1. Jarrad Davis, LB, Florida
This has already been suggested by ESPN's Jordan Raanan. But it would still be a major surprise, because the Giants simply don't value linebackers. They've spent just one third round or higher pick on the spot since 2006 and just two since 1997. That could change this year, as Davis and a few others would be worth this pick, but it'd still be major surprise given the Giants' M.O.
