The New York Giants have officially turned their attention to the offseason with free agency and the NFL Draft as the main priorities, especially with the Senior Bowl having just finished and the combine on the horizon. With that in mind, we've compiled the most interesting tidbits around the Giants as the draft approaches:
Giants want DE help?
The New York Giants could be looking for a high-priced DE this offseason, reports The NY Daily News. They claim the Giants "are expected to spend their highest percentage of their cap room on at least one top pass-rushing DE." That could mean the Giants try to bring back Jason Pierre-Paul and/or Robert Ayers, who are both free agents. But there are also some big name pass rushers out there in the draft who should be available when the Giants pick, including Robert Nkemdiche. If they don't land the player they want in free agency, look for them to address the need in the draft.
Or will they look to the middle of line?
Even if New York decides to pass on an edge rusher, they are still expected to upgrade the middle of the defensive line. ESPN's Todd McShay thinks the Giants should take Louisville DT Sheldon Rankins with the No. 10 overall pick:
We've been on Rankins' bandwagon for quite some time, as his combination of quickness and power popped off the screen whenever we turned on the film. After having a terrific week of practices at the Senior Bowl, the versatile D-lineman is shooting up draft boards. At 6-foot-2, 303 pounds, Rankins would give the Giants a devastating DT combo with Johnathan Hankins.
Rankins had 53 tackles and six sacks this season.
Elliott and Giants not a match?
The New York Giants taking Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott has been a popular mock draft selection early in the process. Elliott is clearly the top RB in the class, and the idea of adding a true workhorse makes sense for the Giants. However, NJ.com's James Kratch says it doesn't add up for the Giants to select Elliott.
Kratch lays out four main arguments as to why the Giants won't pick Elliott. They are: (1) that they Giants have other pressing needs, (2) the Giants have four RBs under contract, (3) taking an RB in the first is a major risk and (4) the Giants can get an RB later in the draft. With New York's seeming desire to use their first-round pick on a defensive lineman, it appears that they will pass on Elliott.
