The start of the 2017 NFL Draft is less than one month away, and the New York Giants are looking to add several impact players to help them take another step forward next year, starting with the No. 23 overall pick. Here are all the latest Giants draft news and rumors you need to know:
New York have Oklahoma RB Joe Mixon off draft board?
There is a growing belief around the NFL that Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon could be drafted as early as late in the first round in the draft, but the Giants do not appear to be one of the teams that are interested in him, according to Matt Lombardo of NJ.com.
It is difficult to envision the Giants would even consider putting Mixon on the team's draft board after withstanding the backlash from kicker Josh Brown's alleged domestic abuse issues last season.
Mixon was suspended for the entire 2014 season following an incident in which he punched a female student in the face. Last season, he rushed for 1,274 yards and 10 touchdowns on 187 carries while catching 37 passes for 538 yards and five more scores.
Ron Jaworski says Giants should draft Pitt QB Nathan Peterman
Even with Eli Manning in the fold, the Giants are entertaining the though of drafting the eventual replacement for the 36-year-old late in the draft. ESPN's Ron Jaworski thinks the guy they should be targeting is Pitt QB Nathan Peterman:
"I think Peterman at Pitt is a guy that I think is a project," Jaworski said.. "And, he's a good project. When you look at the quarterback position, you have to look at development. Certainly with Eli, you're probably going to get a year or two more.
"I always believe that you should take a quarterback. Develop him. Get him onto the practice squad. You find out about him. That's a position that takes time. You can run out a wide receiver, at tackle and they can contribute quickly. Very few Dak Prescott come along and play the way he played last year. Peterman is a guy that I would take a good, hard look at."
Peterman, who transferred from Tennessee to Pitt after two seasons, passed for 2,855 yards with 27 touchdowns and just seven interceptions last year while rushing for 286 yards and three more scores.
CBS mock draft has Giants drafting Alabama OL Cam Robinson
New York also needs offensive line help, and many expect them to fill that need in the first round. Will Brinson of CBS Sports projects the Giants to draft Alabama tackle Cam Robinson with the No. 23 pick.
The Giants made a nice signing when they brought in Brandon Marshall, but no one should ignore the issues on the offensive line. They have to get more protection for Eli Manning or it won’t matter who’s catching passes.
