The New York Giants have a major need at running back with just Paul Perkins and Shane Vereen expected to split time at the position, and they are expected to try and find some upgraded depth in the draft. Though they may not use their first round pick on a running back - they do have several other needs - they are expected to draft one early. Here are the three running backs they are the most likely to target:
1) D'Onta Foreman, Texas
Remember the prime Brandon Jacobs years for the Giants? Drafting Foreman can bring that type of bruising, powerful running game back to New York. Foreman might only be a two-down back, but if that's the case, he'll make a perfect pairing with Paul Perkins. The Giants are projected to draft him in the second round in Chat Sports' latest mock draft.
2) Samaje Perine, Oklahoma
Another bruising back who New York could draft, Perine has quick feet and a powerful running style that makes him hard to stop. He split carries with Joe Mixon at Oklahoma and will likely have to do the same in the NFL (he's not a three-down back), but if Foreman is off the board, Perine is someone New York could pick up in the third round.
3) Dalvin Cook, Florida State
If New York does choose to use their first round pick on a running back, Cook will be their guy. When the college football season ended, people were legitimately debating whether Cook should be the first running back taken - even before Leonard Fournette. Now, due to concerns about "people around him," there's a real chance he could fall to the second round. That's a joke. Cook's combination of elite vision and breakaway speed is special, and he's a reliable receiver out of the backfield as well.
